Mehdeeka is for solo marketers or small teams working in the B2B, SaaS, startup, and tech spaces. Check out the previous issue on the best issues of 2020. Help me grow Mehdeeka by sharing it with a friend or colleague!
I am back at work this week, and I assume by today most people will be. I’m keeping it light this week because I (and I assume everyone else) want to ease back into work.
Over the break I made an effort to not think about work, but inevitably marketing is everywhere so I couldn’t help it. But I’m saving the marketing stuff for a new 3 part mini season which is coming up, and instead I’m going to talk about the ‘work’ side of this newsletter.
Further down in this newsletter is a link to an article about new years resolutions, and I wanted to share mine with you. I don’t do resolutions, but I do pick a theme for each year to help me make decisions when I don’t know what to do and things like that.
This year’s theme is selfish
And it really is mostly aimed at my professional life. Saying ‘no’ to working late as much as I did in 2020, putting a cap on how many hours of calls with our UK counterparts I’m willing to do per week, asking for my worth and value to be recognised, and also being more ballsy in putting myself out there.
Good friend and PR maven Harrison Polites (read my interview with him about PR here) wrote up a bio for me at the end of 2020 and it was a bit of an “oh yeah, I did all those things” moment for me.
So, I’ll be putting myself (and this newsletter) out there a lot more in 2021 and walking into every room with the confidence of an old white man. Ill be saying ‘sorry’ less and ‘give me that microphone’ more.
I hope you do the same.
What’s this button? It’s step one of being more selfish. This substack is free, but it’s not cheap. If you’d like to tip me for Mehdeeka just click, or you’d like to be more selfish yourself and receive tips for your work/projects, sign up through the same link.
Good reading
Anne Helen Peterson’s substack in general is great reading, but her issue on new year’s resolutions was particularly good;
exercising regularly, eating a very balanced and healthy diet, sleeping more/sufficiently, sticking to their budget and saving money, growing spiritually, traveling, and learning new skills. How!!!! Who can do this!?!? A retired person, maybe??
Some visual beauty from Yellow Trace, the office spaces in these residential buildings in particular caught my eye - one and two.
A roundup of 2020’s best book covers.
And earlier this month, I wrote my annual “what I did this year” over on Medium, please do check it out if you’ve ever wondered “who the hell is this girl sending me marketing emails”.
Next week
I’ve got an interview with Madeline Lucas from Small Giants lined up, so look forward to that, and then I’ll be kicking of Feb with a 3 part mini series on product marketing!
